Chapter Seventeen

MICHAEL

I was a bit tired the next morning because I’d spent the whole night reading A History of Dragonkind. It was a fascinating book, but difficult to read and eventually my eyes had fallen shut. Probably for the best anyway, as I was still meeting Zed today. I’d decided that I wanted Kylan, yes, but I felt it was too late to cancel my plans with Zed now. It would have been rude.

“Just try to have some fun,” Adrian advised me before the dragon picked me up at 3pm sharp. At least he was punctual. I appreciated that.

Zed greeted me with a smile. “Any place in particular you would like to go?”

I shook my head. “I’m not sure. Anywhere with a nice view.”

“Gotcha. The waterfalls it is.”

That did indeed sound nice. Still, I felt a little bad that I might be leading Zed on, since I had no intention of becoming romantically involved with him at any point. Right now, I couldn’t think of anyone but the man who’d shared his childhood fairy tale collection with me. I kept wondering if I should say something even as Zed shifted in front of me. The silver scales of his dragon form seemed to reflect the sunlight. I’m sure he would have impressed me had I not been thinking of someone else.

He beckoned me to get on his back and I climbed on carefully, deciding to take Adrian’s advice to have some fun. After all, I only had a few days left on the island and if he wanted to show me around, I shouldn’t say no.

We didn’t stay in the air for long before he landed in a forest clearing.

“It’s not far from here,” he said as he changed back.

It was a hot day and the sun stood high in the air as he led me deeper into the forest. Already, I could hear the sound of rushing water in the distance.

“This is one of my favorite places,” Zed said and after another moment, the trees cleared up in front of us to reveal a truly majestic waterfall.

“Wow.” My mouth fell open at the sight. “This is beautiful.”

Zed gave me a smile. “I usually come here by myself, but it’s nice to have company, too.”

I sighed. I had to tell him, didn’t I?

“Is something wrong?” he asked.

“Not wrong, but…” I looked away from the waterfall and turned to him. “I know this is supposed to be a date, but…” How was I supposed to say this?

“You don’t like me that way, huh?” he helped me out.

I stared at him in surprise. Was I so easy to read?

“Don’t sweat it,” he said. “No reason we can’t just hang out.”

I exhaled in relief. “Thank you for being so understanding.”

“It’s not a problem. I’ll live. I mean, you’re great and all, but being single is nice, too, you know?” He sat on a rock near the river.

“Yeah, I… um… totally. Being single is great.”

He laughed, and something in my tone of voice must
